Udacity created a Localization Essential Course in association with Google.
So what is localization?
In the world of information technology, localization means translating and adapting a product or service to a particular language, culture, and geographic market. And there are two main aspects to that. The first one is stylistic. You have to make sure the language tone you use is appropriate for each local culture. But then there's also a technical aspect. You may have to make changes to things like date and time formats, alphabetization, or even the direction of reading to make them appropriate for the language you're localizing into.So localization means more than just translating a message or text. For us, it's about making a whole product feel tailored to users everywhere. Here at Google, we localize over 100 products, work with thousands of translators and reviewers, and translate hundreds of millions of words every year. In fact, in 2015, the number of words we translated is the equivalent of 400 copies of Tolstoy's "War and Peace." Google is far from the only company investing in localization. Every day, more and more users are coming online, and market research shows that 85% of users will only use a product if it's in their native language. This need for localized content has made the language industry the fourth fastest growing industry in the world, with a global size of an estimated $40 billion.
